(first century)
Jude is listed as an apostle in the Gospel of luke and in Acts. matthew and mark, however, list the twelfth disciple as thaddaeus. He is traditionally regarded as the author of the New Testament Epistle of Jude, where he is described as the ‘brother of james’. One of Jesus’s brothers (and also therefore brother of James) was also called Jude, so that is a possible identification. According to the apocryphal Passion of Simon and Jude, he was martyred in Persia while preaching the gospel. Traditionally Simon and Jude are commemorated together and Jude is best known as the patron saint of lost causes.
